Checking the author, the evidence and other sources

The digital literacy* lessons centred on three questions: Who is behind this information? What is the evidence? What do other sources say? Among 574 ninth-grade students, the mean score for evaluating authentic online content increased from 2.24 to 3.75 points out of nine (McGrew and Breakstone, 2023).

What the study supports: Targeted instruction can improve how students evaluate online information.

What it does not establish: Without a randomised control group, the study does not demonstrate a lasting effect in every situation.

Can you distinguish credible news from false news?

Training improved news discernment

Preregistered experiments in the United States and India tested a brief media-literacy intervention. On the study’s measure of discernment*, performance improved by 26.5% in relative terms in the US sample and by 17.5% in the more educated online sample in India (Guess et al., 2020).

What the study supports: A brief intervention can improve people’s ability to distinguish mainstream news from false news.

What it does not establish: It does not mean a 26.5% reduction in the lifetime risk of being deceived; the effect was neither identical nor equally durable across all groups.

Can you keep asking questions when someone sounds convincing?

An argument is not volume. It is a claim supported by evidence.

A multi-year programme of dialogic argumentation* taught young people to engage with opposing positions. The improvement transferred to independent essays on new topics, and students developed a stronger understanding of the relationship between evidence and argument (Kuhn and Crowell, 2011).

What the study supports: Guided argumentation can develop questioning, responses to counterarguments and the use of evidence.

What it does not establish: The research did not measure success in every personal conflict or a general “resistance to authority”.

Can you apply data skills beyond school?

Statistical reasoning in everyday problems

Four experiments showed that training in the law of large numbers increased the frequency and quality of statistical reasoning* in everyday problems. The researchers also observed transfer of learning* to domains that had not been directly practised (Fong, Krantz and Nisbett, 1986).

What the study supports: A method for working with data can transfer to a new decision-making context.

What it does not establish: The study does not demonstrate higher investment returns or more successful stock-market trading.

Can education influence real-world financial behaviour?

Evidence from 76 randomised experiments

A meta-analysis* of 76 randomised experiments* involving more than 160,000 participants found an average positive causal effect* of financial education on both financial knowledge and subsequent financial behaviour (Kaiser et al., 2022).

What the study supports: High-quality financial education can affect both knowledge and measured financial behaviour.

What it does not establish: The result is not a promise of profit, protection from every loss or a guide to trading.

FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION

Five steps before you believe a claim

You can use the same process for a video, conversation, presentation, report, chart, contract or financial claim. It does not teach you to doubt everything automatically. It teaches you to know when to ask and what to verify.

  • Observe

    Separate what you can actually see from what you immediately assume about it.

  • Ask

    Ask a question that could either confirm or disprove your first explanation.

  • Verify

    Identify the author, the origin of the data, the sample size and what independent sources say.

  • Argue

    State the evidence behind your position. Respond to the counterargument, not the person.

  • Decide

    Name the risk, the uncertainty and the reason your next step is proportionate.

An authority may have experience. A confident person may have influence. Neither is a substitute for evidence.

Digital literacy *
The ability not only to use digital tools, but also to assess the author, credibility, evidence, purpose and context of online information.Practical example: A video promises a guaranteed investment return. Before acting on it, you find out who funded the video, whether the creator earns money from the recommendation, where the figures came from and whether independent sources confirm them.
Discernment *
In this study, the difference in how participants rated the credibility of mainstream and false news. It is not a general-purpose “lie detector”.Practical example: A social-media post claims that your school has cancelled lessons. You compare the anonymous post with an official school announcement and reliable news coverage, paying attention to the quality of the supporting evidence.
Dialogic argumentation *
An exchange of claims, questions, counterarguments and evidence between people. The aim is not to shout the other person down, but to test the quality of the reasons.Practical example: A student disagrees with a teacher’s claim. Instead of saying “you are wrong”, the student explains which source or data supports a different conclusion, listens to the counterargument and proposes checking the evidence together.
Statistical reasoning *
Reasoning about data, samples, probability and variation so that one striking case is not automatically treated as a general rule.Practical example: A friend makes a profit on three trades and claims that the strategy always works. Three successes are a small sample; you need to examine a longer period, losses, fees and performance against the wider market.
Transfer of learning *
Applying a learned method to a new task or situation that is not identical to the original training.Practical example: You apply the source-checking process used for a school assignment when a company owner claims that a new working method is safe: you ask for the rules, measurements and independent evidence.
Meta-analysis *
A statistical synthesis of results from several comparable studies. It makes it possible to estimate an average effect across a larger body of evidence.Practical example: One school claims that a particular method greatly improved results. A meta-analysis of several comparable studies shows whether a similar effect appears repeatedly, rather than in a single striking case.
Randomised experiment *
A study in which participants are assigned at random to the groups being compared. Random assignment helps separate the effect of the intervention from other differences between people.Practical example: A head teacher wants to compare two tutoring programmes. Assigning students at random reduces the risk that one group contains only the more motivated or higher-performing students.
Causal effect *
A change that, given the study design, can be attributed to the intervention being examined rather than merely to two events occurring together. Causality means a cause-and-effect relationship.Practical example: The number of errors falls after a company introduces training. That alone is not enough to conclude that the training caused the improvement; the software, team or workload may have changed at the same time.
